“Messenger.com will transition to facebook.com/messages on April 16, 2026. After Messenger.com ceases operations, the system will automatically redirect you to facebook.com/messages for messaging on your computer,” Facebook announced.

The Messenger application for computers will no longer be available. If you are using Messenger without a Facebook account, you may continue chatting on the mobile Messenger app,” the announcement states.

This move comes only a few months after Meta shut down the standalone Messenger apps for Windows and Mac computers.

According to Techcrunch, this change was anticipated, as Meta had previously directed desktop users to the Facebook website for messaging instead of directly using the Messenger website.

This change was initially discovered by software researcher Alessandro Paluzzi. Meta is notifying users about this update through pop-up windows on the website and the Messenger app.

Many users have expressed frustration over having to rely on the Facebook website for sending and receiving Messenger messages.

While Meta’s closure of some Messenger platforms may annoy users, this decision helps the tech giant reduce costs by having fewer platforms to maintain.

Meta has yet to provide feedback on this matter.

Messenger was first launched as “Facebook Chat” in 2008. Facebook (now Meta) developed Messenger into a standalone app in 2011.

Over time, Meta has positioned Messenger as a separate service from Facebook. In 2014, the social network separated the messaging feature from the main mobile app to encourage users to use Messenger.

However, the company reversed this decision in 2023 by beginning to incorporate Messenger back into the Facebook app.
